Job Description
Hi! I have a game idea called **Rhythm Skate**, and I wanted to ask if you would be able to develop it.
The most important thing to understand is that **I mainly need the core gameplay mechanics, a simple main menu, and a configuration file that allows me to create and customize all the levels and their content myself.**
I do not need a large or complicated game with lots of extra features. I want to keep the project as simple and affordable as possible while making sure the core mechanics work properly.
# 1. Main Concept
Rhythm Skate is a rhythm game based on figure skating and ice skating moves.
Players use four directional inputs: Up, Down, Left, and Right. Arrow symbols fall from the top of the screen, and players must press the corresponding keys at the correct moment to earn points.
The game should support simultaneous inputs, as well as combinations of keys pressed quickly one after another.
Different combinations represent figure skating moves, such as Triple Lutz, Double Axel, and other moves that I can define myself.
The gameplay should be synchronized with music that I can choose for each level.
# 2. Main Menu
I need a simple main menu with three buttons:
* **Play** – Opens a level selection menu where players can choose a level.
* **Keybinds** – Allows players to change the four directional key bindings.
* **Leave** – Exits the game.
When players click Play, they should see a list of all the levels I have created.
Each level should have its own name, and **all levels must always be unlocked**.
The interface does not need to be particularly complex or visually advanced. A clean, simple, functional design is completely fine.
# 3. The Most Important Part: A Configuration File for Everything
**I do NOT need an in-game level editor. I only need a simple and understandable way to configure the game myself through a file or script.**
This is one of the most important requirements of the project.
I want you to create the core gameplay mechanics and a configuration system that allows me, as the owner, to control the content of the game without needing a programmer every time I want to change something.
For example, you could use a JSON file, another configuration file, or a clearly organized script. I am happy with whichever solution is simplest and most practical.
The file should allow me to configure:
* **Levels:** Create, rename, edit, and delete levels.
* **Moves:** Create and name figure skating moves, such as Triple Lutz or Double Axel.
* **Combos:** Define which arrow inputs are required for each move.
* **Timing:** Decide exactly when each move appears during a level.
* **Music:** Choose the music file for each level.
* **Synchronization:** Set the timings of the moves to match the music.
* **Scoring:** Decide how many points each move is worth and customize the scoring rules for each level.
Ideally, all these settings should be stored in one clearly organized configuration file, or in a small number of simple files if that is more practical.
I do not need a visual interface for editing any of these things.
**I simply want to open the file in a programming editor, change the settings, save it, and have the game use my changes.**
Please organize the file so that I can easily understand what each setting does. Include comments, examples, or simple instructions explaining how to add a new level, define a move, change its timing, assign music, and adjust its points.
I do not expect to understand complicated programming code. I just want a straightforward system where I can follow your instructions and change the relevant values myself.
### Example of What I Want to Be Able to Do
Imagine that I want to create a new level.
I would like to be able to:
1. Open the configuration file.
2. Copy an example level or follow a simple template.
3. Enter the name of my new level.
4. Specify the music file I want to use.
5. Define the figure skating moves I want to include.
6. Set the arrow combinations required for each move.
7. Specify the exact time at which each move should occur.
8. Set the points awarded for each move.
9. Save the file and launch the game to test the level.
The game should automatically read the level information and display the new level in the level selection menu.
This is just an example of the workflow I am looking for. You can implement it differently if there is a simpler solution.
**The key requirement is that I can create and manage all my levels and their content myself without having to change the underlying gameplay code.**
# 4. Gameplay Mechanics
The actual gameplay should work as follows:
* Arrow symbols fall from the top of the screen toward a target area.
* Players press the corresponding directional keys at the correct moment to earn points.
* The game checks whether the inputs are correct and how accurately they were timed.
* Points are awarded according to the scoring rules I have configured for the level.
* Music plays throughout the level.
* The arrows appear at the appropriate times to synchronize with the music.
The four available inputs are Up, Down, Left, and Right, but players must be able to change their key bindings.
The game must support two types of input combinations:
**Simultaneous inputs:** Multiple directions can be required at the same time.
**Sequential inputs:** Multiple directions can be required quickly one after another.
For example, I might define a move called "Triple Axel" that requires a specific combination of directional inputs.
The game does not need to understand the real-world physics of figure skating. The skating moves are simply names I use to organize the different input combinations.
# 5. Defining Moves and Combos
I want to be able to define my own figure skating moves in the configuration file.
Examples include:
* Triple Lutz
* Double Axel
* Triple Axel
* Any other moves I decide to create
For each move, I should be able to specify its name and the required arrow inputs.
I should also be able to reuse the same move in multiple levels.
For example, I might define a Triple Axel once and then use it in several different levels, with different timings or scoring values.
If a simpler implementation is possible, I am happy to use it.
# 6. Timing and Music
I need to control exactly when the moves appear during each level.
For example:
* A move occurs at 5.2 seconds.
* Another move occurs at 7.8 seconds.
* Another move occurs at 10.0 seconds.
These timings should be configurable through the file.
I also want to be able to add my own music files and assign a different song to each level.
The music and arrow inputs must be synchronized so that players can play along with the rhythm.
The important thing is that I can change the music and the timing of the moves myself without having to ask you to modify the gameplay code.
# 7. Custom Scoring
I want to configure the scoring system myself.
Different levels should be allowed to have different scoring rules.
For example, I might decide that a particular move is worth 100 points in one level but 250 points in another.
Ideally, the game should also award different amounts of points depending on how accurately the player hits the required inputs.
The exact scoring system does not need to be overly complicated. I mainly need the ability to configure it myself for each level.
# 8. Owner-Only Level Configuration
Only I, as the game owner, need to be able to create, edit, and delete levels.
Regular players should only be able to select and play the available levels.
I do not need an administration menu, a player-facing level editor, an owner account system, or an online level management system.
A local configuration file that I can edit on my computer is completely sufficient.
All levels should always be unlocked, with no progression system or unlock requirements.
# 9. What I Actually Need You to Develop
To make the scope of the project clear, these are the main things I need:
**1. The core gameplay mechanics**
* Falling arrows.
* Input detection and timing.
* Simultaneous and sequential combinations.
* Music synchronization.
* A scoring system.
**2. A simple main menu**
* Play.
* Keybinds.
* Leave.
* A level selection menu.
**3. A configuration system**
* A simple file or script that allows me to define levels, moves, combos, timings, music, and scoring.
* Clear instructions explaining how to edit it.
* The ability for the game to load my custom levels automatically.
**That is essentially the entire project.**
I do not need you to create lots of levels, develop an advanced editor, build an online system, or add unnecessary features.
I mainly need the game mechanics to work, the basic menus to be functional, and the configuration system to be easy for me to use.
I would much rather have a simple, reliable implementation than an unnecessarily complicated one.
# 10. Final Questions
Would you be able to develop this?
If so, please let me know:
* Which game engine you would recommend.
* How you would implement the configuration file.
* Whether I would be able to create new levels and customize all the moves, combos, timings, music, and scoring myself after development.
* What the estimated cost and development time would be.
I am open to your suggestions if there is an even simpler or more affordable way to achieve the same result.
Thank you!
